OMG OMG OMG! Really? The long-awaited Macintel ultra-thin, ultra-portable speed king is coming? I want one! I want one! I want one!
Awww… when have I become so greedy? I used to be happy with my freaky old and slow Pentium III, and now I should be happy with my MacBook, right?
All of a sudden, I feel like starting to write up my Christmas wish list. :p
Hmm……

I have a white MacBook. I always love white tech gadgets.
Chap loves black, and he thinks the black MacBook looks better than the white one.
I think he just likes to stand out from others.
Anyway, he ended up getting me a white MacBook. Besides the fact that I want a white one, it was also because the black MacBook has a lower price-performance value than the white ones.
Well, here’s a spoof about the performace of the more-expensive black MacBook, a gift for those who ever considered buying a black MacBook.

A while ago, Chap told me about a site that offers colouring service to MacBook Pro. You can have your Mac’s exterior customized to a colour of your choice.
Recently they expanded this service to the new MacBook. Well, that’s predictable; but as a MacBook owner, of course I have to blog it and ramble a bit on this whole colouring thing.
The above colours would be my choices if I were to spend US$500 to colour my MacBook.
Yes, US$500! How many people would pay $500 to change the colour of their Mac’s? Isn’t it a bit too much? If I had $500, I would have bought more RAM for my MacBook coz 512MB RAM is so not enough.
You know how slow my MacBook can get? What about its taking 30 seconds to respond? That’s exactly what happened when I was only running two programs (small background jobs where each takes less than 2MB RAM are not counted.)
Well, I know Firefox has a serious memory leak problem. Actually, it is always the biggest memory consumer on my Mac. It accounts for about 100 to 200 MB of real memory usage, which is about one-fifth of what I have on my Mac.
Nevertheless, it is a new computer …… a new Mac running on Intel’s dual core chip. Naturally I expected it to drastically outperform my ready-to-die Pentium III. How could it be even worse than my Pentium III? Impossible eh?
That’s why I can’t help complaining when my MacBook crawls.
Someone linked this problem to the 67 degrees Celcius threshold, at which MacBook will start making a “moo” sound and applications freeze frequently.
I’m not sure if applications would start freezing frequently once the threshold is reached, but my MacBook does “moo” occasionally. Nevertheless, this doesn’t happen so often that I would be annoyed by it.
Someone complained about it at an Apple Store, but Apple said this was normal. A lot of speculations have been made as to why the fan “acts up” like this. Some said it was a poor design. Some said it was a manufacturing problem.
If you’re curious about how this “moo” sound is like, click here; but this is not exactly what I heard from my MacBook. My MacBook doesn’t “moo” so loud.
Anyway, I can minimize the number of programs running on my Mac; say… I only have my Firefox and Finder running. Then everything would be fine. It’s not too much of a trouble for me, but of course… getting more RAM for my Mac would be better… but then it also means that I have to give up 512MB RAM.
Why? The 512MB RAM that comes with the system is actually two 256MB RAM on two slots. Rumor says, MacBook was designed to be running on two identical RAM; it will allocate resources better and hence perform better this way.
So what does it mean? There’s noooooo way that I can make use of the two 256MB RAM that comes with the system if I want to add more RAM to my computer.
If you asked me what I dun like about this new MacBook, I would say …… not enough RAM and the fact that it needs two identical RAM to achieve its best performance (yet I’m only given two 256MB RAM).
Would it be wiser to upgrade my MacBook at the very beginning (when I bought it)? I dunno ……
Chap’s friend upgraded his MacBook Pro a few weeks ago. He got 1GB RAM for $130 (After Tax). Get the same upgrade from Apple? It will cost you $200(Plus Tax).
Well, prices of all computer parts are constantly dropping as newer and more advance versions keep flooding the market. I definitely can survive with 512MB RAM.
One last problem that I want to bring up here: the heat problem.
Well, this doesn’t really bother me; but I guess I’m a perfectionist and this makes me feel that this MacBook is not so perfect as advertised. It seems that there are still problems needed to be taken care of, but you know how business works — it’s not about making a perfect product. It’s about making money.
I guess it won’t take them long to solve this heat problem (and that “moo” sound). Then there comes a new version of MacBook …… Hope it won’t be so soon. (I’m a selfish!)

It’s not a simple thong. It’s a nano thong, and omg! It’s leather! I can’t help laughing when I saw it, but I doubt if people would really spend the money to buy it. Still, it’s definitely worth blogging about.

A T-shirt? Yes, but not a simple T-shirt. Only iPod shuffle owners can wear the most out of it. Yes, that’s me! Too bad that the T-shirt seems a bit too big for me.

Apple introduced the iPod shuffle in early 2005. Since my old MD was broken and I had told Chap earlier that I loved the look and feel of a USB stick —- (like it sleek and simple), Chap immediately ordered a 1GB shuffle for me when it came out, thinking that it would make a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift.
Well, I like it. I like it small and light because I dun want to make my already-very-big bag to be even bigger. However, I never seem to really love it. As a matter of fact, (Shush!) I don’t use it very often. Ironically, the alleged special feature of this iPod SHUFFLE is the main reason.
The first time I used my shuffle, I fed it with a Gigabyte-ful of MP3’s including a few soundtracks; so what was the outcome when this shuffle feature kicked in and allied with Mr. No-screen?
I didn’t know what the heck I was listening to!
Maybe it’s just me. I dun like listening to soundtracks randomly, especially when it was the first time I listen to them.
Anyway, now my shuffle is always in “sequential” mode; but even so, I still find myself being deprived of the privilege of choosing what I want to listen.
Happy songs, sad songs, fast songs, slow songs, English songs, Chinese songs all have their own moments. I need different kinds of music at different time; but it was never easy to find a match with the iPod shuffle.
In addition, the shuffle has became a really “cheap” MP3 player. The 500MB-iPod shuffle is always given as a free gift if you join a club, switch your bank, or successfully apply for a visa card.
When Chap bought my shuffle, it costed him Cad$200.
I can’t wonder more why everything I got always ended up as something super common and “cheap”. Another example is my Motorola V3. My friend got it for Cad$40 (no contract). I bought it a tiny bit earlier in Hong Kong and it costed me HK$2800 (around CAD$400).
I thought when I bought my V3 in HK that it would be a special cell phone to carry around in Canada, but now everyone I see on the subway is using the same phone.
Well well well, what else should I say besides telling everyone how unlucky I am.

Apple wants to make their switch to Intel chips seem like a no-brainer, but the reality of it was a lot more complicated than just faster chips for Macs. [Read More]

There’re both good and bad about digging Digg. I actually haven’t paid much attention to it for a month. (It seems like years to me.) Well, I somehow started digging again tonight. (Hope I won’t get too addicted like I did before -_-)
Anyway, I just saw an article on Digg about switching to Mac: The Switch. A Boy and A Powerbook. There’s something really true I find in this article. The writer said the reason his g/f wanted a Mac was mostly because she liked the design.
He said,
“She’s a girl and she makes purchase decisions based on factors such as cuteness and design not technical specs.”
This is so darn true. LoL. I won’t deny that I make purchase decisions in the same way … though I should be more conscious of the performance of a computer.
Anyway, this is not the main reason why I blog this article. The main reason is …it is encouraging me to get a Mac.
Recently Alvin posted a comment on my recent blog: “get ibook or macbook pro!!! not only it looks nice, it’s also unix based.”
We in Computer Science all know that Unix is a better system than Windows. All software engineers at the “recent” Google talk at UofT said that they didn’t use Windows … though they were building applications for the Windows system.
Moreover, most of the professors in the CS Department are using either iBook or PowerBook; and I’ve been seeing a lot of people in Bahen using an Apple. I had TA using it, too.
Well, I tried to tell myself that all these people simply care about the look of an Apple; but then I just had another professor using an iBook for his lectures. Sure there must be something really good about it.
Anyway, MacBook Pro seems too big to me. 15″ widescreen, right? I guess I will just go for 12″. Maybe they will have it later. Even if they won’t, they probably will have a new iBook coz Steve Jobs said all Apples will switch to Intel chips by 2006 June. I dun remember where I heard it from, but I’m pretty sure that there wil be some new Apples.

Heard of its arrival a few days ago, and I immediately shouted out my excitement on my MSN Messenger.
A few friends thought I was getting it. Well, I was not sure if I like it or not because it was bigger and heavier than an iBook; though 4 to 5 times faster than a PowerBook as claimed by Steve Jobs.
Besides, I want a white laptop. iBook is cheap and actually powerful enough for me.
I dun play computer game. I dun need it to watch a movie. I dun do graphics. Then why do I need a Powerbook or even a MacBook Pro ?!
I did think about getting a really cheap laptop and install unix. Unix doesn’t require a lot of resources like disk space and ram. Sure it might be a bit inconvenient when you first use it; but as one of my professor said, “Unix is user-friendly, but it’s just choosy about who its friends are”, I’m sure this wouldn’t be a problem.
Nevertheless, finding a cheap laptop that I would like is not an easy task. I guess I care about appearance too much that I won’t be able to stand some really outdated models. I know it’s silly, but it’s me!
Anyway, there isn’t really a choice for me now. I dun really have any extra money to buy a laptop. All these are just a dream.
If you’re in the same situation as me, dun watch the following video. Steve Jobs will make you forget about everything and see only the new MacBook Pro.
