The 1% Rule

The 1% Rule

Recently there’s an emerging rule of thumb on the Internet.

It suggests that if you get a group of 100 people online then one will create content, 10 will “interact” with it (commenting or offering improvements) and the other 89 will just view it.

This rule applies to many popualr user-driven sites like YouTube and Wikipedia.

So what does it mean? Nine out of ten people would pass by a site that demands too much interaction and content generation from users.

I belong to that 89% of people. Not that I dun want to contribute back to the communities, but I simply dun have the knowledge and resources.

This reminds me of Open Source Software. I really appreciate those people who work so hard for the benefits of others. Next time when you’re using a freeware, think about the people behind and the effort they put in unconditionally.

Remark:

About a month ago, GNOME was looking for female developers for a Summer Outreach Program. I was really excited about it at first, but I finally didn’t submit an application. Although it says you dun have to be the greatest coder to take part in it, I still feel that I’m not capable of handling it.

The Firefox Explosion

Wired 13.02

Firefox’s assult on Internet Explorer isn’t the only attack Bill Gates is facing.

A ragtag coalition of open source projects is steadily chipping away at the Microsoft empire.

Here’s a look at market share on eight different fronts. - Josh McHugh

Pretty old news, but the graphics are cool. Love it! Firefox Rocks!

Bill Gates said, “search is pathetic.”

Bill Gates

Donny Deutsch: So how far are you behind Google? Is it too late to catch up?

Bill Gates: We’ll look back on this time and realize that search is pathetic. If I ask for something, I should get it, not a list of things to click on.

It’s great for where it is, but it will get so much better. Right now, there’s no way to qualify results by authority, by trusted sources. Sources I trust, that is.

Microsoft builds platforms for information organization. We’re not going to “organize the world’s information” for it.

What do you want to do with your life?

What do you want to do? What do you want?

Stop procastinating? Wake up when your alarm clock goes off? Stop biting your fingernails?

Quiz Smoking? Eat healthier? Exercise regurlarly? Lose 10 pounds? Become a morning person?

Spend less money? Buy a house? Buy a car? Buy a boat? Open a bar?

Get over someone? Fall in love?

Get a tattoo? Watch the IMDB.com Top 100 movies?

Be more self-disciplined? Be organized?

Learn AJAX style programming? Contribute to an Open Source software project? Learn a foreign language?

Kiss in the rain? See the northern light? Swim with dolphins?

Or simply worry less and be happy?

Sure everyone has something that he/she wants to do. Wanna know what other people want to do? Find out on 43 things who have the same goals as yours, get inspired, make it happen and share your progress.

Here are something fun I found on 43 things:

1) 2 people want to have a hot dog cart and sell hot dogs.

2) 803 want to get a gmail account. That’s surprising! I’ve a lot of Gmail invitations to give out but apparently none of my friends wants it because everyone already had one. Anyway, I dun think these people need my help because I saw a few people posted there saying that they would hook up these people.

3) 613 want to witness the end of IE. Well, sure I love Firefox; but I dun think that IE would die so easily. IE7 is coming. Maybe there would be a few surprises? Who knows?

Why surf the web alone?

Peekko chatFound on listible when browsing through the list of web 2.0 products and services, “Peekko chat is a Firefox extension that allows you to chat with other people looking at the same web site(s) as you. It adds a toolbar to Firefox that shows how many people are in that page’s chat room and allows you to instantly connect with them.”

I think it’s fun, and I just installed this Firefox extention. Yay! Not sure how useful it is to me, though; probably I won’t use it very often; but it won’t hurt to try out new thing, right? Maybe I’ll bum into you on some porn sites. Lol … nah! Porn is not for me. I’m a good girl — beautiful and smart.

P.S.

Is Peekko a cousin of meebo? They have very similar names eh?! Both are cute names.

Chap talked about meebo long time ago on his blog. I saw him use it, and the interface is cute, I think. :)
